Words & Music by Nic Jones

This is an English Roots song written by Nic Jones back in the late 1960s, but would apply to most countries even today. This is Nic’s comment on human greed in general and unscrupulous developers who happily destroy our countryside and heritage for profit and in the name of ‘progress’. They can be found everywhere greed is handsomely rewarded which means the world over really. The song is a warning to us all to keep an eye on unscrupulous people.

Lyrics

Words & Music by Nic Jones

CHORUS
All around the country, They're changing green to grey,
What grows up for a century, In a minute you can throw it away.

They come down here with chainsaws, They come down with JCBs
They're digging up all of the hedgerows, boys, And they're digging up all of the trees.

CHORUS

Saw the man, the engineer, Pocket-full of TNT
And he laid it under the mountain side, And blew it to eternity.
CHORUS

I lived down by the meadow, I used to live down by the wood,
But they come down with bricks and ready-mix, Now there's a city where the trees once stood.
CHORUS

You can spend your lifetime, Writing to bureaucracy
But you'll use up so much paper, You'll just be digging up another tree.
CHORUS

They come down here with chainsaws, They come down with JCBs
They're digging up all of the hedgerows, boys, And they're digging up all of the trees.
CHORUS
Repeat CHORUS
