Words & Music by Phil Drane

This song is a series of flashbacks to sunnier, balmier days at Morecambe Bay in Lancashire over the Bank Holidays in the late ‘60s. I was about 19 at the time and into scooters and anoraks. My mates and I used to swan off to Blackpool on the odd bank holiday weekend passing people in their Ford Populars and Standard 8s cars stuck in the 5 hr queue to get there, and the 5 hour queue back to Manchester or Liverpool or wherever. While they were sweating to exhausts and fumes we’d be kicking back and “passing time” on the beach, imagining what the sea would be like if we could actually see it. Switchbacks (roller coasters) and the Amusement Arcades are where we’d often pick up girls. A ‘nobby’ is a traditional Lancashire fishing boat that trawled for shrimp, prawns and flatfish that emerged in about 1840 and many were converted to yachts and raced when the trawling died out in the early 1900s. Features me on vocals and Yamaha Lotus LJ26 Half-Jumbo guitar in the key of D minor. To play along with this track - Guitar in Open Dm Tuning (DADFAD); No Capo; Open Dm Chords.

Words & Music by Phil Drane

Sitting here, with sun in my eyes
Hazy pillows way up high in the sky
Watching seagulls go spiraling by,
'Cos we're just passing time, yeah
Ice cream melting, feet in the sand
Wiping sweat with the back of my hand
We catch the strains of the promenade band
Now we're just passing time

Chorus
Too much action has no attraction for me
It's almost a crime
This deckchair likes me and it invites me
To settle down and pass the time away.

Sitting here, as hot as can be
People cooling & fooling down in the sea
This can of lager tastes like heaven to me
‘Cos we're just passing time
Donkeys drowsing, they doze side by side
Young lasses squeal as the switchbacks they ride
See Nobbies dancing on the Morecambe Bay tide.
Oh we're just passing time

Chorus

Sitting here, with sun in my eyes
Hazy pillows way up high in the sky
Watching seagulls go spiraling by,
'Cos we're just passing time
Dazzling neon, amusement arcades
Red lobster children with (wi’) their buckets & spades
Eyelids that droop as the light slowly fades
‘Cos we’re just passing time.
